Surimono ( German "printed matter") is a special form of Japanese color woodcut. The motif of the turtle with a sake bowl from which rice wine was drunk is original. The picture from 1892 shows a section, the text is much longer, format 20 x 56 cm. The term denotes greetings from individuals, poets' associations (often with poems), but also companies,
to friends and acquaintances. They were therefore not intended for sale and therefore did not have to be submitted to the censors. The most common occasion was around the New Year celebrations. Calligraphers were commissioned to design the font. Calligraphy is still taught in Japanese schools today. The red stamp refers to the artist.
