Following the example of Alexander von Humboldt, he undertook two expeditions lasting several years to North and South America. He was an officer, explorer, ethnologist and zoologist. In North America (1832 -1834) he was accompanied by the Swiss painter Karl Bodmer, who created the 5 wonderful turtle panels (for illustrations see graphic, Bodmer).
