Copperplate engraving, around 1590 and thus the oldest original graphic in the collection, format with frame 31.5 x 23 cm. The work of the Dutch painter and engraver (from Haarlem) can be assigned to Mannerism. The master's works were also export items and can be found in many museums today. The sheet probably comes from the series "The Five Senses" and surprises with the Latin inscription, roughly translated: "If something is harmful to look at, do not touch it with your hands, lest you soon be carried away by a worse evil." But it is also referred to as "marital bliss" (the turtle stands for fertility). Goltzius was not only a brilliant designer and engraver, but also a successful entrepreneur (see Albrecht Dürer). His copperplate engravings inspire because of their technical perfection and unconventional imagery.
