Poster, acquired in Zakynthos (Greece) in 1996, hand-signed, format 70 x 50 cm, numbered 859/1000, model is a watercolor by the artist. The occasion was the 10th anniversary of the “Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece”. On the back there is a large, artistically stylized turtle (black drawing) and an extensive Greek text explaining the urgent need for protection, which is endangered, among other things, because of the tortoise shell and the tasty meat, but is now even more endangered due to disturbing light sources and the incorrect behavior of numerous beach visitors. There I was lucky enough to observe the hatching of sea turtles (Caretta caretta / common name: loggerhead sea turtle) on a protected beach and since then I have been continuously committed to the protection of many turtle species. The island is considered one of the most important nesting areas in the entire Mediterranean. Since around 1999, the Action Group for Species Protection (AGA) and its partners from MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Safe the Sea Turtles) have been working to create a marine national park there. Both institutions are still active on Zakynthos today. I am all the more pleased that, according to the AGA, a record of around 2,400 nests were documented on the beaches there in 2024. The Caretta caretta is also native to the neighboring island of Kefalonia; the protection organization there is called “Wildlife Sense Kefalonia”.
