Albrecht Dürer, copperplate engraving, 1498, title "The Miracle of the Sea", a highlight of printmaking, format 32 x 44 cm. The shell of a sea turtle
serves as a shield for Aquarius. Dürer's work dates back to the Renaissance, the time of a spiritual rebirth with which the modern era begins. My print is a hand-press copperplate print (heliogravure). It was etched into a copper plate using a photographic and manual process, colored by hand and printed on heavy laid paper (arranged by the Alte Pinakothek in Munich). Dürer was a graphic artist and painter, but also a mathematician and entrepreneur (see Hendrick Goltzius). He collaborated with well-known artists and employed a number of talented employees.
The 29-year-old's self-portrait, on display in the Alte Pinakothek, is brilliant. All works are provided with his self-confident and almost modern-looking monogram.
