TURTLE SHIP (so-called turtle ship with dragon head/bixi), bronze, on a metal base with red velvet and Plexiglas lintel, 15.4 x 14 cm. A souvenir, obtained from the artist Duk Su Yun (further information under "Search: Duk Su Yun). Such ships were built on behalf of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and were first used by him against Japan in 1592. He defeated the numerically superior Japanese fleet in several sea battles, something that people in Korea are still proud of today. A true-to-the-original and very stately replica, But among other things, commemorative medals and stamps can also be seen in the museum in Seoul. After these wars, larger turtle ships were built and equipped with armor against incendiary arrows. One of a total of 30 cannons could be fired through the mouth. In My collection also includes a banknote and a small coin with this motif. I was able to see similar and larger replicas of this type of ship at Documenta 11 in Kassel (by Allan Sekula) and photograph them in the Maritime Museum Hamburg.
