Complete shells of two Greek tortoises (Testudo boettgeri), which I received as a gift on the occasion of a house clearance, size
13 and 17 cm. These wild animals are still often kept as pets in Western Europe. I was lucky enough to observe individual animals in the wild in Greece. Several specimens have the pattern of a butterfly on the underside of their shells (see bottom left).
