Silk carpet, very finely knotted by hand (324 knots per square cm), Ösipek workshop in Herek (Turkey, Western Anatolia), signed, format 48 x 27 cm. The motif "The Turtle Educator" refers to the famous painting by Osman Hamdi Bey (1842 - 1910), among other things, a painter and successful archaeologist. It is considered his most important work, created in 1906. The oil painting became known worldwide in 2004 when it achieved an auction record of $3.5 million for the Pera Museum in Istanbul. Since then there have been diverging interpretations of the work and countless souvenirs. The motif still exists in the collection from eight magnets (put together like a puzzle), in reproductions and on the museum's admission ticket. In order to be able to compare the motif, a photo of the above-mentioned painting can be found in the collection (see category: Photo). The carpet was sold by Brigitte Dobisch (Würzburg). I also purchased the first item in the entire collection from her, a hand-potted turtle from Mexico.
