"Asterix as a Legionnaire", from 1967 (here the hardback edition in German translation from 2023), depicts the military turtle formation (Latin "Testudo" = turtle) of the Roman army, developed at the time of Julius Caesar. Legionnaires protected themselves with their rectangular shields, lined up from above and from the sides. This formation appears in several Asterix books. The idea was derived from the fields of a turtle shell. There are several other depictions of this, the most important of which is on Trajan's Column in Rome.
