The magnificent floor mosaic in the crypt of the Basilica in Aquileia from the IVth century shows, among other things, the fight between the rooster (symbol of light/day) and the turtle
(which stands for darkness/darkness). The rooster is considered, among other things, a symbol of Christian vigilance, including the resurrection. It heralds the new day and crowns many church towers to this day. The turtle, on the other hand, is considered a creature of the underworld. The Italian word for turtle (Tartaruga) is the same as the ancient Greek word tartarus, the name for the underworld. Surprisingly, the motif can be found twice, once in the south room; the more striking representation is shown here in the north room.
