The book was published for the exhibition "DARWIN'S EVOLUTION" (2009, 399 pages), the palace is the Natural History Museum Vienna, one of the largest natural science collections in the world (opened in 1889). The main focus was on Charles Darwin, who in 1835 on the Galapagos Islands ("the parade ground of evolution") enjoyed the pleasure of riding a giant tortoise several times. Among the extremely numerous illustrations are a depiction of radiolarians by Ernst Haeckel and a caricature of Darwin. The philosopher Anaximander of Miletus (around 610 - 546 BC) already had ideas about evolution. Independently of the book, 12 tortoise objects from the collection of Friedrich Siebenrock (1853 - 1925), artfully prepared by himself, are on display in a large glass display case in the museum. The zoologist and turtle expert made a name for himself through numerous first descriptions; several turtle species were named after him, including the Chelodina siebenrocki (snake-necked turtle). The following pages of the book include an excellent wall painting (putto with large turtle), the skeleton of a loggerhead turtle and a number of other turtle motifs.
