Ancient Egypt and an inscription from the Books of the Dead, "May RE live and the turtle die," inspired me to create this commissioned work. The brief was my rough draft of a round temple with a turtle dome. The artist, with whom I have been in good contact for many years, has implemented the idea ingeniously in both the form and the painting, height 40 cm. On the back of one of the columns he ironically reversed the hieroglyphic inscription ("May the turtle live and RE die"). Writing is an essential element of ancient Egyptian culture in religion and ideas about the afterlife, but also in everyday life. The turtle also appears in the variety of hieroglyphs, e.g. in the Temple of Ramses II in Thebes. Books of the Dead on papyrus rolls were aids in finding the truth before the court of the dead and were, for example, attached to the sarcophagus or wrapped in the mummy.
