The magnificent floor mosaic in the crypt of the Basilica in Aquileia from the 4th century shows, among other things, the fight between the rooster (symbol of light/day) and the turtle
(symbol of darkness/darkness). The rooster is considered, among other things, a symbol of Christian vigilance and also of the resurrection. It announces the new day and still crowns many church towers today. The turtle, on the other hand, is considered a creature of the underworld. The Italian word for turtle (tartaruga) is the same as the ancient Greek word tartarus, the term for the underworld. Amazingly, the motif can be found twice, once in the south hall, and the more striking depiction in the north hall is shown here.

The pattern of a turtle resembles a mathematical Voronoi diagram. We use a Voronoi diagram here, which displays exhibits on a surface partitioned according to the similarity of the pieces. The similarities of the pieces are calculated by an artificial intelligence algorithm.
